And we are back! After playing our US Debut in November 2016, we are back in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to perform for Eaux Claires Festival – again uniquely curated by Aaron Dessner and Justin Vernon. We can’t wait to finally be back and meet all the friendly faces again – plus we will reunite with Polica for Music for the Long Emergency. And there’ll be more – you know we love to collaborate and we’ll bring some arrangements with us…
s t a r g a z e is incredibly honoured to be back at Philharmonie de Paris in October 2017. After playing our debut on a double-bill with Matmos as well as Chassol, we now created our solo-set to honour the Class of ’67: The Beatles with their ground-breaking concept album Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, Beach Boys‘ Pet Sounds and The Smile Sessions as well as two composers that seem to be far away but yet are closely connected to the sound-explorations of our favourite boybands: We gonna premiere Stockhausen‘s Stop & Start in Paris and we’ll present Berio‘s Folk Songs, Michelle and O King featuring the beautiful voice of Katherine Manley.
May 5th 2017 – Philharmonie, Cologne; May 6th – BERLIN; May 7th – Capitol, Hannover
s t a r g a z e is very proud to announce our newest project circling around the power of spoken words and how hip-hop/ rap – artists are approaching political, philosophical or social topics. inspired by one of the most well-known and legendary collectives – Wu-Tang Clan and their album Chamber Music, we are gonna develop new material based on snippets, ideas and songs of our featured artists, creating a new sound and exploring the possibilities of our acoustic, mostly classical instruments joining forces with samples and beats. think “hip-hop unplugged” meets chamber music.
As part of the collaboration between Barcelona’s Auditori and Sónar Festival, stargaze will perform the Spanish premiere of Death Speaks by David Lang and we are very honoured to be joined by Nico Muhly on the piano, part of the original line-up (next to Bryce Dessner, Owen Pallett and Shara Worden). Death Speaks revolves around and lends a voice to death in five long compositions that dilute the boundary between pop and contemporary music and is based on Lieder by Franz Schubert. Lang’s work does not escape the darkness of death, yet somehow manages to endow it with a strange intimacy and extraordinary beauty.
Next to Death Speaks, we will perform a couple of more compositions, so details will follow!
February 5th 2017 at G Live Lab in Helsinki, Finland.
s t a r g a z e’ Boards Of Canada project is based on their seminal HI Scores EP which was recently re-released, and acknowledges the layered orchestrations of the originals, reimagining the colours stemming mostly from the band’s legendary arsenal of analogue synths by instrumental, semi-accoustic means. Since Boards Of Canada have abandoned the realm of live performance some time ago, stargaze have decided to humbly step into that void, as a hommage but also in order to create a live-set valid in its own righ. This special performance at Musical Nova will be a collaboration between stargaze and drummer Teppo Mäkynen at G Live Lab.
For our Finnish Debut we are over the moon to also feature two compositions of Qasim Naqvi, drummer of the amazing Dawn of Midi – their concerts took our breaths several times already. Qasim is a talented composer, too! We will not only perform his Preamble but also premiere a new composition commissioned by us.
Find your tickets here and see you soon in Helsinki.
December 2nd 2016 at Kammerspiele München, Munich (DE)
Alien Disko is a two-days festival curated by The Notwist featuring musicians from the versatile music scene of Munich and a colourful range of guests such as the Sun Ra Arkestra and Dawn of Midi (one of our favourite bands!). We are very happy to be part of the weekend as well, finally performing our arrangements of Hi Scores in full. Andi and Karl-Ivar of The Notwist will join us on stage, too!

November Music in Den Bosch is one of the largest Dutch festivals for exciting new music. For ages already they follow their own unique approach to curate their festival and we have been curious about it for a long time. The festival made it possible for stargaze’s own Aart Strootman and Morris Kliphuis to compose two new compositions for the collective’s line-up. Both compositions will feature unexpected elements and electronic. We are also very happy to finally perform Deerhoof Chamber Variations by Greg Saunier (Deerhoof) again. And if this wouldn’t be enough, Greg decided to write us a second composition!
